Johannes Høsloft Klæbo - Interview
Johannes Høsloft Klæbo
Gloves are an important part of my life
– Johannes Høsflot Klæbo about the details that make a difference.
Most people with an interest for skiing have heard of Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, but if you’ve been living under a rock in recent years, let’s sum it up by saying that the 24-year-old Norwegian is already seen as one of the best cross-country skiers ever. His characteristic way of running up the slopes has revolutionized the sport and he has already collected 40 World Cup victories, 6 World Championship victories and 3 Olympic gold medals. Johannes has worked with Hestra since 2017, and 2019 saw the launch of his signature model Klæbo Pro.
“I always wear the same gloves at all sprint competitions, and I use them in training as well. It's Ergo Grip Race Cut with my own signature on it, in pink of course. A sprint race is only three minutes, but as there are four races in one day, it becomes really important to stay warm and active. I usually change into dry race gloves 9 minutes before the start, and then I switch to warmer gloves immediately after the finish.”
Johannes uses his own model Klæbo Pro at lower temperatures, both during training and at normal distance competitions. With weather-resistant Lycra fabric on the upper hand, stretch in the grip and a windproof Gore-Tex Infinium lining, they let moisture out but keep the warmth in. The cuff is short - less overlap makes it easier to access the pulse watch.
“I am super pleased about the collaboration with Hestra, we have a constant dialogue. I'm a bit of a nerd and very careful with the details, and I love to work with dedicated professionals. In my opinion, there is no one in the world who beats Hestra at making gloves. They always want to push things further.”
Johannes always wears gloves during exercise – even if he’s roller skiing on a hot day – to achieve the same grip in training as on competitions. But it’s not only when skiing that he wears gloves.
"I'm a little obsessed with gloves to be honest, it's become a way of life for me. Every autumn I go hunting with my grandfather, then I use outdoor gloves. When I dress up, I wear fashion gloves. I use a golf glove when I play golf, cycling gloves when I bike and when I ski downhill I use alpine gloves. It’s just a whole lot of different gloves.”
